Head of Sustainability

Location Spain , Tarragona

Role Purpose:

This role aims to implement and monitor GCR’s environmental sustainability strategy. You will communicate these plans and strategies to our customers, external stakeholders, and colleagues.

You will be an active key player engaging key customers through sustainable development plans. You will propose innovative strategies to clients to improve their assets’ sustainable and economic performance.

You will ensure compliance with the relevant country’s legislative and environmental responsibilities as well as develop and lead sustainable performance improvement projects to establish a sound foundation and framework for the delivery of GCR’s strategic objectives.

Key accountabilities:

  • Leverage your core consulting skills to understand and structure the clients’ challenges; develop hypotheses on solutions; undertake market and trends assessments and develop business cases to unlock value and enhance sustainability outcomes
  • Engage stakeholders, customers, and suppliers with sustainability win-win plans
  • Ability to implement the strategic vision through operational focus and deliver it through hands-on management, inviting constructive challenges and working closely with management teams across the business
  • Oversee the growth and development of GCR’s sustainability and environment obligations and commitment
  • Ensuring the proper development, implementation, and monitoring of the company’s sustainability indicators, and always focusing on continuous improvement.
  • Deliver an External ESG report with holistic sustainability aligned the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Lead the creation and distribution of sustainability reports, briefings, and interactive dashboards for a range of stakeholders, ensuring data and insights are tailored to each audience • Contribute to the content of marketing campaigns that reinforce the GCR sustainability approach
  • Prepare presentations and facilitate workshops with internal and external audiences
  • Deliver and expand industry-leading sustainability & environmental program
  • Identify networking events
  • Join online industry groups on social media to build a strong and active social profile
  • You will be responsible for ensuring that our sustainability activities meet and exceed existing country compliance measures
  • Ensure the ongoing credibility of the Sustainability function
  • Lead sustainable change on objectives such as but not limited to:
    • Greening our fleet and upgrading our locations for plug-in hybrid & electric vehicles.
    • Embed the sustainable travel policy that delivers on CO2 emission awareness & reduction.
    • Zero Waste to Landfill – achieve zero waste to landfill certification at key sites and KPIs/Targets for the remainder. Ensure circularity where possible and that we have robust data sets to monitor and measure
    • Sustainable Supply Chain: advise and support the move towards a sustainable supply chain in collaboration with Procurement colleagues
    • Drive the collection of more granular data sets to allow the business to measure

Skills & Experience:

University degree, preferably in environmental sciences, biology or ADE. Sustainability qualification and ESG training is desirable, but the experience is key

  • Experience and deep knowledge and passion for promoting sustainability in its broadest sense, environmental initiatives, and carbon reduction.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory/statutory requirements and best practices in environmental change. Knowledge of sustainability legislation at the European level.
  • You will be commercially astute with a broad business understanding, and the gravitas and presence to engage effectively across senior management teams to support widespread change
  • You will understand how to monitor KPIs and measure performance against targets
  • Experience in managing a project and/or program at its strategy/development phase, where the outcomes and nature of the work are still being defined
  • Experience in bringing projects in on budget and on time
  • Hardworking, comfortable with data, Management Information reporting, and managing projects
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) – we want to bring the sustainability narrative to life through meaningful reporting and stakeholder engagement
  • High level of English. Fluency in other languages would be an asset.
  • Familiar with sustainability certification processes.
  • Familiar with carbon footprint calculations, in particular indirect impacts.
  • Flexible, able to navigate a fast-changing organization. Output oriented.
  • Team player, cooperates with others and at the same time challenges inertia in a constructive way.
  • Curious and innovative, always learning and looking for the best alternative or solution to every challenge.
  • Forward-thinking: you anticipate opportunities and challenges.

  • Knowledge of Simapro, Gabi, or OpenLCA, and databases (ecoinvent,…) are a plus
  • Experience in the plastics industry is a plus.

Familiarity with the following tools is a plus: materiality analysis, risk maps, development of reports and sustainability reports for companies, as well as in the evaluation of the main standards and sustainability index of the market, such as GRI, PRI, GRESB, Sustainalytics, CDP, etc., is valuable to the management of the terminology of corporate social responsibility.

Experience in financial risks related to sustainability (SFDR), and specifically, with climate change (TCFD), as well as the principles of sustainable investment (UNPPRI).

Knowledge of Social Value and sustainability concepts such as responsible procurement, circular economy, eco-efficiency, renewables, carbon footprint, LCA, biodiversity/biophilia, climate change, etc., as well as experience working with sustainability seals, will be valued.
